Abstract

Food ingestion has played a vital role to human by sustaining lives and radionuclide contamination is very possible. The objectives of this study was to evaluate the natural radionuclides like ( 238U, 232TH, 40K ) in some foods consumed in northern part of Delta State Nigeria and its radiological risks, the analysis result was determined using NaI(TI) gamma spectrometry detector and the highest activity concentration for 238U, 232Th, 40K were 1095.95 ± 210.96 Bqkg-1 , 42.36 ± 15.28 Bqkg-1, 67.26 ± 12.28 Bqkg-1 respectively. All values are from the food samples based on the balance between input and output rates of radionuclides in the food samples with the mean values for 709.42 ± 131.46 Bq/kg for 40K , 28.59 ± 2.82 Bq/kg for 238U, 31.49 ± 5.08 Bq/kg for 232TH , the annual effective dose of all natural radionuclides for the consumers of the food stuffs were determine as follows ( 0.05, 0.12 , 0.08 )mSvy-1, The radiological hazard risk indices is below the world average permissible and recommended safe limit of <1,<1 and 0.29×10-3 respectively. Therefore, it is an indication that the study area is safe for human activity.
